JCWI - The Joint Council For the Welfare of Immigrants
Since its inception in 1967 at the Dominion Cinema in Southall, London, the JCWI has advocated for the welfare rights of immigrants in the United Kingdom. Its historical record is replete with numerous triumphs in the pursuit of justice for migrants who were harmed by Britain's stringent immigration controls. Presently, the organisation continues to function by offering assistance and advocacy to migrants residing in Britain.
This month, I had the honour of researching the JCWI archives in the Hull University History Library in order to shed light on the organization's extraordinary contributions over the past fifty years. The leadership of this organisation was composed of individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, serving as an example of the diverse community they assist.
