Smile in the face of adversity

Posted 08th January 2023

Let us not forget this iconic picture which went viral for a number of reasons.

A lot of people have shared this image from 2017 on social media thousands of times, and have described it as a sign of resistance to racism.

The right-wing English Defence League (EDL) movement, a protest group that called Islam "an authoritarian, political doctrine which imposes itself by force," organised the event in multicultural Birmingham. The meeting in 2017, which attracted over 100 supporters despite being denounced by several influential Birmingham city council members, still took place despite a significant police presence.

Altercations ensued with alcohol fuelled angry EDL members raging and ranting at activists in the presence of police. So much for integration and assimilation.

Even journalist Piers Morgan (whom personally I'm certainly not a fan of) tweeted that it was photo of the week. Commenting in his tweet "Enraged EDL racist stared down by amused, contemptuous Asian woman".

If the first generation of immigrants have left us with this calibre of anti-racist activists - then they've done their job right!

P.S. I will be posting blogs on a biweekly or adhoc basis from now. Thanks
