Show racism the Red Card came about In January 1996, the Red Card was founded in part because to a contribution from Shaka Hislop, the goalkeeper for Newcastle United at the time.
An initiative which was to stamp out racism out of football. The official objective was "aim to combat racism through enabling role models, who are predominantly but not exclusively footballers, to present an anti-racist message to young people and others."
From its humble beginnings in Newcastle the initiative went global, producing DVDs and educational and teacher training programs.
Certainly what it did do was put racism into the forefront of thought for people. It reminded them that someone somewhere was suffering from racism and something needed to be done.
Exactly what, was not always quite clear in the initiative.
